Can you make thermite with fertilizer?

Im a "pyro" or "fire bug" as most people say , and my friend's brother shares this love for fire, and me and him were alking and he said "you cant say you love fire unless you know what thermite is and how to make it " so then he told me what it was and said all you have to do is light some fertilizer on fire, does it actually work?? i want to know before i actually try it
